Go-Ahead Singapore Fills 60% of Bus Captain Positions

7 April 2016, Singapore – Go-Ahead Singapore has hired 424 bus captains since it announced its employment package seven weeks ago, on 15 February 2016. This represents 60% of the 700 bus captain positions Go-Ahead Singapore is looking to fill ahead of starting of operations in the third quarter this year.

358 of the hires are existing bus captains currently serving on the 24 operational routes under the Loyang Bus Package. This means 87% of the existing bus captains affected by the transition to the contracting model, have accepted the employment offer by Go-Ahead Singapore made on 4 March 2016. The other 66 comprising of Singaporeans and Permanent Residents were successful applicants from the company’s recruitment drive and come from outside the public bus services industry. Among the 66 new entrants, 60% already have a Class 4 or 4A driving license.

Go-Ahead Singapore has started training its bus captain hires since March 2016, equipping them to deliver safe, comfortable and reliable bus services. All hires will need to undergo training programmes to obtain necessary licenses and certificates to ensure competence in skills and knowledge on various aspects such as bus equipment mastery, customer service and safety. There will also be induction sessions on company culture, guidelines and protocols as well as practical training for route familiarisation and application of safe driving techniques. The costs of training new entrants with Class 3 driving licenses to obtain Class 4 ones will be borne by Go-Ahead Singapore.

Bus captain Chow Kok Weng said, “I am very excited about joining Go-Ahead Singapore as this is an opportunity for me to enrich my experience with new skills and knowledge.”

New entrant Arumugam Ramasamy added, I was from the logistics industry and I am looking forward to picking up new skills with Go-Ahead Singapore.”

Go-Ahead Singapore will continue recruitment activities, and expects to fill all 700 bus captain positions before starting operations.
